There's been a lot of talk about the forthcoming Chevy Camaro ZL1 as of late. But, there's a new Camaro concept in the gullwings that warrants attention, too. Calling upon a bygone era when Chevy could sneak a high-performance variant past the powers that be at GM, straight into discerning auto connoisseurs' hands, it's called the COPO (Central Officer Production Order) Camaro. However, this highly-advanced model, designed to meet the stringent codes outlined by the NHRA Stock Eliminator drag racing competition, won't go unnoticed.
Designed to tear up the NHRA Eliminator tracks, leaving chunks of asphalt in its path, the new Chevrolet COPO Camaro Concept will accommodate two unique engine packages. That way, it can compete in both the A Stock and AA Stock classes. The first option features a 427-horsepower (hp) 7.0-liter engine. The second - a 327-hp, 5.3-liter engine.
Beyond powerplants, the COPO Camaro Concept is fitted with a suite of drag-race ready features and equipment. For performance, there's a custom aeromotive fuel system complete with a fuel cell and integral high-pressure pump. For safety, there's a full chrome roll cage. For handling, there's a coil-over front suspension with Strange Engineering adjustable struts and custom rear suspension. For, track-hugging capabilities there are lightweight COPO-exclusive racing wheels.
"The COPO Camaro is a proof of concept for what a Chevrolet Stock Eliminator entry could look like," says Jim Campbell, VP, Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, GM U.S. "And it is a clear indication that Chevrolet intends to homologate the Camaro for sportsman drag racing."1
